What kind of recall is this?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues vehicle and equipment recalls when a defect creates an unreasonable risk to safety or when a vehicle fails to meet a federal motor vehicle safety standard. NHTSA does not use a numbered class system; the specific safety defect and remedy are described in the notice. Under federal law, the manufacturer must repair the defect free of charge. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) with the manufacturer or on nhtsa.gov to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.

What should you do now?

  1. Check your VIN. Enter your 17-character vehicle identification number at nhtsa.gov/recalls or on RAM's recall page. Recalls almost always cover only a specific range of VINs.
  2. Contact your dealer to schedule the free repair. Under federal law the manufacturer must fix the defect at no cost, even on out-of-warranty vehicles.
  3. Follow any interim guidance. If the notice includes precautionary steps (limit certain features, park outside, etc.), follow them until the repair is completed.
  4. Keep your records. Save the repair receipt — it is your proof that the recall work was completed if you sell the vehicle later.
